Community activists confronted dozens of California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers in the East Los Angeles neighbourhood of El Sereno on Thursday, amid the occupation of vacant California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)-owned homes.
CHP tactical teams reportedly went door too door removing activists who were occupying Caltrans-owned homes along El Sereno's Sheffield Avenue. An as of yet unknown number of activists was detained.
Officers were seen being confronted by a group of demonstrators protesting over the arrests and chanting "move, b*tch, get out the way."
On Wednesday, members of the 'Reclaim and Rebuild Our Community' group moved into several vacant homes bought by Caltrans as part of a now-defunct plan to extend the 710 Freeway, demanding a safe place to stay during the COVID-19 pandemic.
