Using Black Forgiveness As An Excuse To Further Victimize Black People Is SINFUL says Preacher
One the topics trending on social media since Tuesday was the hug between Bertrand Jean, Botham Jean's brother and Amber Guyger, the woman who murdered him.
Many are asking how can anyone forgive Guyger for her actions
There is a historical aspect to Black people forgiving others that is rooted in Christianity, but was Bertrand Jean and State District Judge Tammy Kemp's embrace of Guyger a bit too much? Why are African Americans in many aspects expected to forgive atrocities committed against them?
Rev. Cornell Brooks, former president and CEO of the NAACP and Visiting Professor of the Practice of Prophetic Religion and Public Leadership at Harvard Divinity School weighed in on the Bertrand and Judge Kemp's embrace of Guyger on Twitter saying:
"I have preached forgiveness for 25 years, BUT using the willingness of Black people to forgive as an excuse to further victimize Black people is SINFUL. America should ask Black people forgiveness for serially asking African Americans to forgive sanctioned Police Brutality."
Brooks spoke with Roland Martin about the notion of Black forgiveness during Thursday's edition of #RolandMartinUnfiltered.
