African Weapon Collection - Balanta Saber (F'thun)?
《My Balanta Saber(F'thun)🗡》
The Balanta are a unique ethnic group hailing from the Nile Valley, but currently residing in Guinea-Bissau. Their name means "Those Who Resist", which was coined to them by the Mandinka who experienced extreme resistance and aggression at the hands of the brave and undefeated people.
The name for "sword" in K'rassa (Balanta Language) is "F'thun". They come in all shapes and sizes, but the one featured here is a Manding-inspired saber that was probably acquired by the Balanta from a victorious battle over their would-be oppressors, the Mandinka.
