The Invisible Empire: the KKK and Hate in America
What happens when a brown journalist of Indian descent meets the Ku Klux Klan?
Throughout its 150 year history the KKK has been one of the most feared and fearsome white supremacist groups in America. Although their national influence is now minimal, Imran Garda found a group emboldened by Trump's Presidential bid -- and determined to make their voice heard again.
He traveled to Harrison, Arkansas to meet Thomas Robb, who is the Grand Wizard and National Director of the Knights of the KKK, a man on a mission to rebrand the Klan. Robb was seemingly at ease with speaking to a non-white journalist but determined to reeducate Garda, a South African national, on the virtues of Apartheid and racial segregation.
Garda also traveled, under an alias, into the heart of Kentucky to encounter a traditional Klan group, The Nordic Order Knights, led by the Grand Dragon. What he saw there was unprecedented for a person of colour, and opened up disturbing questions about the rise of open racism in the United States in 2016.
