In this true story, in 1980 black high school janitor Clarence Brandley (Courtney B. Vance) is convicted of the rape and murder of a 16-year-old white student. Despite a lack of clear-cut evidence, he receives the death penalty. City councilman Jew Don Boney (Eamonn Walker) and young lawyer Mike DeGeurin (Gil Bellows) investigate, and slowly uncover a conspiracy by authorities to convict Brandley. Convinced of his innocence, they start an uphill campaign to save his life.
