National Guard Arrives in Hollywood to Curb Looters
6/01/20 | 6:00 PM | Los Angeles, CA | Sunset & Vine
National Guard troops gathered strategically to restore peace amidst protesters who defied the 6 p.m. curfew in L.A. on Day 6 of the George Floyd justice protests. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti increased the curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., intent on shutting down vengeful looting and arson throughout Los Angeles. Protesters were apprehended breaking curfew in the block between Sunset & Selma and Sunset & Gower where their hands were zip-tied behind their backs, awaiting transportation to be processed for their arrests. One of the peaceful protest marches began at Sunset & Crescent, ending at Hollywood & Vine. Grammy Award winner musician Lizzo was one of the co-sponsors of the peaceful protest held at 4 p.m at the Federal Building (Veteran & Wilshire); an estimated 1,000 people participated with enthusiasm. Later, when protesters broke curfew and opportunistic looters arrived to take advantage of access to vulnerable retail stores again at various locations, L.A. police officers and a massive presence of armed National Guard, LAPD, Sheriffs, and CHP officers turned up to thwart crime. LAPD Chief Michael Moore said over 700 people were arrested Sunday night, at least 70 of whom were charged with looting.
